Boulder Opal + Gold Ring
by We Are Arrow
A truly unique boulder opal from Queensland, Australia is held by four tiny prongs and a golden border tapering on to a dripped organic band. Glints of indigo, ultramarine blue, and several greens glimmer as the light shifts across the stone. The mount's exposed sides allow you to see where the ironstone and colourful sillica layers meet.
Boulder opal is a unique type of opal which is found attached to a host rock, ironstone, in Queensland Australia. Opal is formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through the earth, it picks up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica-rich solution into cracks and voids , caused by natural faults or decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit. This cycle repeats over very long periods of time, and eventually opal is formed.
