Boulder Opal + Gold Signet Ring

Sold out

A triangular boulder opal is held by three delicately carved prongs with dripped texture throughout its body.  Bronze, green, and coffee colours glint through the layers of ironstone and silica as the light shifts across the opal, complemented by the rich yellow of the 18 karat yellow gold setting.  The mount's exposed sides allow you to see where the ironstone and colourful sillica layers meet.

Boulder opal is a unique type of opal which is found attached to a host rock, ironstone, in Queensland Australia.  Opal is formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through the earth, it picks up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica-rich solution into cracks and voids , caused by natural faults or decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit. This cycle repeats over very long periods of time, and eventually opal is formed.
